چکیده

Distal flow of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement during insertion of the femoral implant results in reduced pressure and cement-bone interdigitation (Markolf, Amstutz, 1976). Insertion of femoral cement plugs in the intramedullary canal to prevent distal flow of PMMA cement in total hip replacement during cementing of femoral prostheses is well accepted and has become current practice (Prendergast et al., 1999). As a result, many designs of cement plugs exist on the market. The aim of this study is design an experimental set-up to compare the performance of the following four designs of cement plugs: (a) REX (Aone Medical B.V.), (b) Hardinge (DePuy), (c) Amber Flex (Summit Medical Ltd) and (d) Cemlock (Sulzer). This was done by recording data of proximal and distal pressures and migration of the cement plugs during cement pressurisation and insertion of the femoral prosthesis in prepared Sawbone femurs.

Background: Cementless total hip replacement is the common THR performed in England, Wales, Northern Irelandand the Isle of Man. The Corail stem is the most popular cementless implant and has a ODEP 10A rating. Review ofits performance in the registry identified an increase rate of revision amongst the smaller stem sizes. However, claritywas not provided on the explanation for this finding. We ...

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) remains a concern in shoulder surgery, especially during arthroplasty. Whilemany studies have explored the characteristics and efficacy of different sterilizing solutions, no study has evaluated themethod of application. The purpose of this study was to compare two popular pre-surgical preparatory applications (two4 x 4 cm gauze sponges and applicator s...

Distal Femoral Valgus Cut Errors in Total Knee Replacement

The causes of malalignment in total knee arthroplasty can be categorized into three different groups; 1) Errors in bone cuts 2) Errors in implant fixations, and 3) The method of setting down the cutting guides (1). We would like to announce that more several distal femoral valgus cut errors may occur during total knee replacement.

INTRODUCTION: Bone conserving designs, such as hip resurfacings, are an alternative treatment option to conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) in young, active patients. Previous studies have shown that medullary fixation can result in significant proximal bone resorption through stress shielding [1,2], while it has been suggested that hip resurfacing arthroplasty will load the proximal femo...
